Usually, when we talk about “light” we mean the part of the light spectrum that is visible to the human eye. For plants, there are certain wavelengths that have been scientifically proven are particularly important for photosynthesis, growth, and development. The term PAR or photosynthetic active radiation is defined by the range of wavelengths that scientists have determined are important for plants including some wavelengths outside of the visible human view.
What are Watts?
Watts is a measurement of the amount of energy input a light requires.
Some LED Grow Light Suppliers will refer to watts as a comparison against HID or MH lamps – this is not strictly correct. A more accurate comparison would be to look at the input watts of an LED Grow Light ( The actual power drawn from the wall) against the PAR (most useful measurement of light output relating to plant requirements).
Top Quality LED Grow Lights will give you information about the distribution of the light wavelengths that are emitted by the light (spectrum), the size of area intended to be illuminated, PAR levels at the plant canopy at a specified distance above the plant and also the actual watts drawn from the wall to create these.
